The Gate Brace Calculator works out the length and angle of the diagonal brace that keeps a fence gate square. Enter the outside width and height of the gate frame, the width of the upright and horizontal frame boards and the width of the brace board. It returns the brace length from long point to long point and from short point to short point, the angle of the brace and the two saw angles, and it draws the gate with the brace on the correct diagonal. A second setting gives the corner-to-corner length for a cable or rod kit. It runs in your browser, is free and needs no sign-up, and nothing you type is uploaded. Use the result to mark the board before cutting and check it against the gate on the bench.

How to use the Gate Brace Calculator

  1. Type the Gate frame width (outside) and the Gate frame height (outside). Measure the finished frame, hinge edge to latch edge and bottom edge to top edge.
  2. Choose the Type of brace: a wood or metal board between the rails, or a cable, rod or turnbuckle kit that runs corner to corner.
  3. Choose the Hinge side you see from the front. It decides which way the brace is drawn and described.
  4. For a board brace, enter the Width of the upright frame pieces, the Width of the top and bottom rails and the Face width of the brace board. A 2x4 laid flat is 3.5 in wide.
  5. If you are buying a telescoping or adjustable brace, open More options and enter the kit’s shortest and longest length from its package. The tool says whether the length you need falls inside that range.
  6. Read Brace length (long point to long point), Brace angle from the horizontal and the two Saw angle lines. Mark the long points on the board and set the saw.

The example buttons fill in a case such as 4 ft x 3.5 ft, 2x4 frame or 8 x 5 ft, cable kit. Reset restores the start. Copy result copies the figures, Copy link keeps your inputs in the page address, and Print / save as PDF prints the inputs, the result, the steps and the date.

How long is a gate brace?

A board brace sits in the opening inside the frame and runs between two opposite inside corners. The opening is the gate width minus two upright boards and the gate height minus two rails. The brace is the diagonal of that opening: the square root of the width squared plus the height squared. For a 48 in by 42 in frame made of 3.5 in boards the opening is 41 in by 35 in, so the diagonal is the square root of 2,906, which is 53.9 in, or 4 ft 5-15/16 in. That is the long edge of the brace, measured from long point to long point. A brace that is 3.5 in wide has a shorter edge of about 46.8 in, because the two angled ends cut off a wedge from the short side.

Which way should the brace go?

A wood brace should run from the bottom corner on the hinge side up to the top corner on the latch side. In that direction the brace is pushed, which wood resists well, and it carries the weight of the latch side down onto the hinge post. A woodworking guide on building a fence gate gives the same direction and warns that a brace set the other way loads the joints in tension, so they can slowly pull apart. A cable or rod works the other way round, because it can only pull: it runs from the top hinge corner down to the bottom latch corner and is tightened with a turnbuckle. The result line “Which way it runs” states the direction for your hinge side.

What angle do you cut on the ends of a gate brace?

The brace meets a horizontal rail at one end and a vertical upright at the other. Its angle from the horizontal is the arctangent of the opening height divided by the opening width. The cut against the upright is that angle away from a square cut, and the cut against the rail is 90° minus it. For the 41 in by 35 in opening above the angle is 40.5°, so the cuts are 40.5° and 49.5° from square. In a square opening both cuts are 45°. Cut both ends the same way, then test-fit the board in the frame before you screw it down.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction does a diagonal gate brace go?

For a wood brace, from the bottom corner on the hinge side up to the top corner on the latch side. The brace is then in compression and holds the latch end up. A cable or turnbuckle kit goes the opposite way, from the top hinge corner down to the bottom latch corner.

How do I calculate the length of a gate brace?

Subtract two upright widths from the gate width and two rail widths from the gate height to get the opening, then take the square root of the opening width squared plus the opening height squared. The calculator does this and also gives the angle and the saw settings.

What is the difference between long point to long point and short point to short point?

The ends of the brace are cut at an angle, so one edge is longer than the other. Long point to long point is the longer edge and equals the diagonal of the opening. The shorter edge is shorter by the brace width divided by sine times cosine of the brace angle.

Does a gate brace stop a gate from sagging?

It helps keep the frame square, but only if it is fixed well and the hinge post does not move. Use exterior screws, not nails, because nails loosen over time. The calculator gives the geometry; it does not check the hinges, the post or the weight of your gate.

How do I know a telescoping brace kit will fit my gate?

Enter the kit’s shortest and longest length under More options. The tool compares them with the corner-to-corner length you need. Kits are made for particular gate sizes, so also read the package for the gate width and height it supports.

Is my gate data uploaded anywhere?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded. It is free and needs no sign-up.
